Telecom Italia (TIM) National Internet Outage

On February 5, 2023, Telecom Italia (TIM) experienced a major nationwide outage affecting its fixed broadband and business Internet services across Italy. The outage affected millions of customers and lasted several hours.

The Internet Society’s PULSE platform analyzed the incident, describing it as a “perfect storm” involving multiple simultaneous issues including BGP routing problems and DNS service failures. Traffic to and from TIM’s networks dropped sharply, with Cloudflare Radar and other monitoring services documenting the scale of the disruption.

The outage affected TIM’s residential and business broadband customers, and some enterprise customers experienced disruptions to international connectivity paths as well. TIM remains the dominant fixed-line operator in Italy, with extensive last-mile access reach.
