Hurricane Beryl Internet Disruptions — Texas and US Gulf Coast

After devastating the Caribbean, Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Matagorda, Texas on July 8, 2024, bringing sustained winds of ~80 mph and cutting power to over 2 million customers in the Houston area. The mass power outages cascaded into major internet disruptions.

Multiple ISPs and network providers reported outages: Cogent Communications, Spectrum (Texas region), Horizon IQ, QuadraNet, and Cloudflare all posted infrastructure notices. Akamai observed significant traffic drops for Texas-originated and -destined traffic. NetBlocks documented the connectivity impacts in two separate reports. Recovery was complicated by the extended duration of power restoration in some areas.
