Dish Network Outage — Ransomware Attack
On February 23, 2023, Dish Network, a US satellite television and wireless provider, suffered a ransomware attack that crippled its IT infrastructure. The company’s websites, customer-facing apps, call centers, and internal employee systems went down. Remote employees reported being locked out of company systems. Boost Mobile, a Dish subsidiary, was also affected, with customers unable to manage accounts or activate new service.
The outage persisted for days before partial restoration. Dish disclosed in a subsequent SEC filing that the attackers had exfiltrated data affecting approximately 296,000 individuals, including some employee records containing personal information. The attack was linked to the Black Basta ransomware group.
